Nautilarm. What is it?
It is:
an all encompassing boat security system that talks to you by text messages. It includes:
- a boat intruder alarm
- a boat remote monitoring system
- a boat remote GPS system
- a boat remote switching system
When triggered for example by an intruder, the siren will sound, the optional strobe will flash and the Nautilarm will send you and two other phones a text message to tell you what has happened to your boat.
You can call the Nautilarm and it will send you a text telling you where it is, what speed the boat is making and in what direction. It will also tell you the state of all monitored areas and systems.
Nautilarm works when your battery isolator is switched off. So, for example, the Nautilarm GPS anchor alarm works when your chart plotter is off!
Boat monitoring is always on. For example: battery level and bilge level can be constantly monitored. Even when the alarm is not set.
You can switch general onboard facilities on and off on your boat from your phone or your key fob). E.g. turn on your courtesy lights when coming back to the boat late at night.
Nautilarm has been designed from the outset to take minimal current from the battery. The manufacturer has developed and selected sensors that also have low current drain. Typically, a Nautilarm installation will run for several months on the primary battery without any recharging.
Nautilarm Xtreme. What is it?
This is the third development of the Nautilarm. It represents a huge leap forward from the Nautilarm V2 for marine users. It is uniquely placed and has a fully marinized beam breaker with the standard kit. There are many improvements and modifications over the V2. These include:
- an anchor alarm / mooring alarm / GPS ring fencing facility
- an improved (more sensitive and reliable) GPS receiver
- GPS reports speed in knots and direction (as well as latitude and longitude)
- An IP67 rated control unit (when cables are properly sealed)
- IP69 rated (all weather, all condition) beam break sensor (unique to Nautilarm Xtreme)
- Space for internally mounted relays (up to three)
- Space for extra switching circuit (on later models)
- Secure separate mounting for backup battery
- Improved and more versatile software (models are software upgradeable)
- Over 50% more text commands
- More informative alarm and information messages.
- Sturdy design (mounted on stainless steel)
We believe that there is no like for like competitor on the market. Nautilarm Xtreme like its predecessor is manufactured from high quality and “approved” components. These make the Nautilarm Xtreme more reliable and accepted (by mobile networks and security industry standards).
Nautilarm. Why do you need it?
There are many reasons why you might buy and install a Nautilarm.
1 THEFT AND BURGLARY DETERRENT
Marine crime is certainly on the increase. Boats and their contents are an easy target. Securing them is not easy. Typically cabins, fuel, deck areas and so on are not well secured (when compared to domestic and vehicle physical security)
BUT
Thieves generally target easier opportunities. The home office advises “secure it”, “mark it”, and “alarm it”. You not only alarm from unwanted intrusion on the boat but also monitor for example for fuel theft. We also supply high visibility warning stickers to deter the intruder before they get to the boat.
2 THEFT OF BOAT (ON LAND OR AT SEA)
Boats on trailers are very often of significantly higher value than vehicles and much less secure.
BUT
Utilising Nautilarm Xtreme will text you when the boat and trailer is moved more than a few metres. Moreover, the Nautilarm Xtreme will then track the location of the boat over many days – even if the power is cut and boat battery disconnected.
This is similar technology to that found in tracker for cars, but without the ongoing fees.
3 BOAT MONITORING
How many times have you got to your boat. Your shore power is not connected and your battery is flat.
NAUTILARM
will warn you before the battery was unserviceable.
Nautilarm can also alarm bilge levels, CO levels, gas levels and so on. So you can be assured about the state of your boat even if you are thousands of miles away. You can always ask Nautilarm for a status report, just to put your mind at rest.
4 SWING MOORING / ANCHOR ALARM
You pull into a lovely cove. You anchor up and go ashore to sample the delights of the local hostelry. Your anchor starts to drift.
NAUTILARM
will send you a text while you are in the pub to warn you that the anchorage is moving. It will continue to warn you until you get back to the boat to fix the problem.
5 REMOTE SWITCHING
It is dark. You are rowing out to your boat but you did not leave the lights on. You can not see to safely get on the boat.
AND
You either send the Nautilarm a text message or press the third button on the key fob. On come your courtesy lights. You can now board safely.
Of course you could switch anything on the boat. For example put on the heating or air conditioning. We will be providing an upgrade so that you can switch multiple circuits separately.

- To ensure boat is in its storage compound
- To ensure boat is in its correct location on a marina
- To ensure boat is on its swing mooring
- To ensure anchoring is not slipping
Nautilarm Xtreme Charter (V3 charter)
This version will be available in near future. It will facilitate complex cruising areas (set by way points). Other facilities suited for charter applications will also be included.
Nautilarm. Can I upgrade from one unit to another?
You can upgrade from one Xtreme to another. You will also be able to upgrade to newer future versions of the Xtreme. Some upgrades can be “unlocked” by sending it a code. Some upgrades require new software to be loaded from a laptop. There will be a few upgrades that might require additional components being put in the Xtreme box.
You cannot upgrade from a V2 to an Xtreme without replacing the control unit. However all the sensor and switching circuitry is compatible.

- Wireless devices also are linked with standard 8 digit code
- Nautilarm supports connection of an “always on” tamper alarm
- Nautilarm can send alarm messages to up to three different text phone numbers
- Nautilarm has been designed throughout to take minimal current from the battery. So it can run on its internal backup battery for several days.
Nautilarm. How will it affect my vessel’s existing electrics?
If you follow our recommendations then Nautilarm will not affect or compromise your existing ship electrical systems. Summary of recommendations:
- A separate (new) live feed from your primary battery to the control box is recommended. Clearly this must be connected direct to the supply battery (not via the battery isolation switch).
- It is recommended that the vessel has at least two batteries.
- Nautilarm reports when the voltage on its primary battery source falls below a preset level.
- It is recommended that Nautilarm switches ships circuits via relays (isolating Nautilarm from ships electrical system).
- If Nautilarm is to override ‘onboard’ switches (e.g. to turn on courtesy lights) then inline diodes will prevent ships power accidentally running through the Nautilarm (ask for technical advice on this).
Nautilarm. Why not use my chart plotter anchor alarm facility?
- Your chart plotter generally has a much higher drain on the battery than the Nautilarm
- Your chart plotter does not send you a text message when moving outside its geofencing
- Your chart plotter is not linked to your high volume alarm system
- Your chart plotter does not have a back up battery
Nautilarm V2. Why is the Beam Break sensor not included in the standard V2 kit?
The Nautilarm V2 is a fantastic alarm system and is a good solution for canal boats, river boats and in less demanding weatherproof installations. The Nautilarm Xtreme family (including the Nautilarm Xtreme Beam Break Sensor)has been designed to work in the more extreme marine environments found in high speed craft, on the coast and at sea and in more open boats.
Therefore it is likely that if you need an Xtreme Beam Break Sensor the Xtreme control box would be better suited to your requirements.
In addition we have developed the software and control in the Nautilarm Xtreme control boxes to easily facilitate setting up and maintaining the Beam Break Sensors.
Having said that if you do require attaching an Xtreme Beam Break Sensor to an existing V2 or you have specific requirements that would be better accommodated with a Beam Break Sensor then these sensors will work with a Nautilarm V2. We would recommend a later version of the V2 dated after September, 2008.
How long can I leave my boat on a swing mooring with the alarm on?
This is a difficult question to be precise about. It depends on your other "always on" equipment, the state and size of your primary battery and the amount of alarm sensors you have
Nevertheless, you should expect more than a few months from a standard 65 Amp hour primary battery and two or three sensors attached to the Nautilarm or Nautilarm Xtreme boat alarm.
The Nautilarm will inform you if the battery level falls below a preset level and this will give you time to ensure you get to the boat to recharge or swap over the primary battery.
How does the tracking work?
If the boat leaves the area set by you as its moored or stored area then it will send you an alarm. You can also set the boat alarm to set off the siren and/or strobe if required.
This alarm text message will include the latitude, longitude, direction of travel and speed of the boat.
It will continue to send you updates giving location, speed and direction of travel at intervals you have preset until you reset the alarm.
If the power is cut and you have an internal backup battery then the unit will continue to send messages. The backup battery is designed to give you several days of support after the main battery power has been disconnected.
Can I get someone else to monitor the boat alarm when I am on holiday?
Yes!
In fact you can set two additional phones to receive all alarm conditions. So you might ask your marina office or local harbour master to have this when you are away.
How much work is it to fit the boat alarm myself?
This is, of course, a difficult question since boats and skills sets are all very different.
Nevertheless, the fit procedure is fairly straightforward. It is certainly as simple as fitting a GPS chartplotter.
On a typical 25 foot cuddy sports boat it would probably take a competent DIY person a full day.
For further information here is the Nautilarm Xtreme Manual
I forgot to set the boat alarm. Can I set it from my phone?
Yes!
In fact you can set and read any setting on the phone just by sending the appropriate text message.
So, for example you can arm the boat alarm by sending: "password, arm"
Here is a complete list of commands for the Nautilarm Xtreme boat alarm.
Will I be able to use your new sensors with the current Nautilarm Xtreme?
Our aim is to make our boat alarms completely upgradeable. We already provide a software upgrade capability. As such we aim to have all future sensor equipment work with any Nautilarm Xtreme.
It is possible that new wireless sensors may not be compatible without a small hardware upgrade to the control box. However, we will still provide an upgrade path.
Will other peoples boat alarms wireless equipment interfere with mine?
The wireless circuit has an individual code and there are well over two hundred unique codes supported on the current hardware. The wireless equipment has a fairly short range of just a few tens of metres. So whilst it is possible to get interference it would be very unlikely. Moreover, if you do experience interference then it would be very easy to change your own code.
We are working on a software and hardware upgrade that will significantly improve our wireless capability. We aim to provide an upgrade path through software upgrade or simple hardware upgrade for all the Nautilarm Xtreme family of boat alarms.
I have only got a small rib. Is this boat alarm suitable for me?
Yes, Absolutely!
Statistics indicate that it is the smaller, older and trailer-able boats that are most likely to be stolen. It is also much easier to board and steal from a smaller and more open craft.
On the other hand a 5.8 metre rib with a reasonable engine will be worth well over £10,000.
So, the boat is certainly worth securing with a boat alarm. In particular it would be worth fitting an alarm that will track the boat should it be stolen.
The Nautilarm Xtreme was specifically developed for the more open and exposed boat and so it is ideal on a RIB or other smaller open boat.
